5 Classic Paintings of David Renshaw
Landscape artist David Renshaw has created a range of work that shows his skill in both realism and a more fantastical style of composition. Widely collected and sought-after, his paintings feature beautiful scenes and focus strongly on love between wistful characters pictured against scenic backdrops.
1. Last Light
A classic painting to show off the delicacy of his brush work and deep understanding of light and shade, Last Light is a painting of an expansive meadow at sundown, with a broad expanse of sky showing the hues of a perfect sunset ranging from rose gold to deep, blue.
The composition gives a feeling of scale and perspective and allows the viewer to feel as though they are looking into the scene that Renshaw saw right before their eyes. The delicately rendered distant trees with their spindly boughs mark out the background, while Renshaw has taken the light and rendered the meadow in rich red.
The image is deeply evocative and really highlights Renshaw’s ability to translate a real scene with grace.

2. Romantic getaway
Reflecting quite another side of Renshaw’s craft is this quite different composition, juxtaposing a sky not unlike the one in the above piece with houses more at home in a Lowry painting.
Featuring a heart motif and impressionist figures floating away into the sky, the painting is a much lighter, more whimsical side of Renshaw’s artwork and one that has proved extremely popular. As part of his Northern Romance series, his recurring theme of stylised hearts and almost cartoon-like houses are a central part of some of his most well-known and well-loved work.
3. Diptique’s Crossing
Another of his Northern Romance paintings, this one brings together some of the style of his more classical landscape watercolours with his stylised homes and hearts. Featuring a bridge in the centre on which the two characters sit, that which falls beneath the bridge is very much of the style of some of Renshaw’s classical watercolours such as Morning Glory (below), while the scenery above the bridge is that much more stylised imagery of the rest of his Northern Romance collection that evokes a feeling of Lancashire or Yorkshire post-Industrial Revolution.
A deeply atmospheric painting capturing sunset in a different and yet in a way that is characteristically David Renshaw, its balance and symmetry bring focus to the central point of the painting – the love affair playing out at its core.
4. Colour of dreams
As Renshaw’s own take on Romeo and Juliet, this painting shows his popular Northern lovers in a dreamlike setting. Set on a tract of land that appears to be floating on air, his Juliet stands on a balcony outside a house looking out into the distance while Romeo watches from behind a cluster of brightly coloured bushes.
Colour of Dreams
As with other paintings of this collection, the fantastical elements are set against a certain degree of realism, with the sky painted with the same attention to detail as those in his landscape watercolours.
5. Morning Glory
Not unlike Constable in its precision and attention to detail, this painting marries Renshaw’s classical and other-worldly styles in a way that renders an almost photo-realistic painting in rich, deep reds almost inconceivable in real life. A golden lake sits still in the middle of the piece and gives an atmosphere of serenity while a little white house on the opposite shore draws the viewer’s attention and contrasts with the rich colours of the rest of the painting.

With an accomplished collection of realistic and more whimsical paintings, Renshaw has a number of wonderful pieces that reflect a range of styles that are always deeply atmospheric.

Iman Malekiwas born on 1976 in Tehran. He has been fascinated by the art of Painting since he was a child. At the age of 15, he started to learn painting under the mastery of his first and only teacher - Morteza Katouzian - who is the greatest realist painter of Iran. Meanwhile, he began to paint professionally. In 1999 he graduated in Graphic Design from the Art University of Tehran. Since 1998, he has participated in several exhibitions. In the year 2000, he got married and in the following year he established ARA Painting Studio and started to teach painting, considering classical and traditional values.
The most important exhibitions he has participated in, are: The Exhibition of Realist painters of Iran at Tehran Contemporary Museum of Art(1999) and The Group Exhibition of KARA Studio Painters at SABZ Gallery(1998) and at SA’AD ABAD Palace(2003). In 2005, Iman received the William Bouguereau award and the Chairman’s Choice award in the second international ARC salon competition.
