Thats Hot — Why Traditional Barn Doors Are So In Right Now

Share/Bookmark

Traditional barn doors aren’t just for farms anymore. These solid types of doors are making their way into apartments in posh neighborhoods and in so many contemporary homes and even offices. So, why is the barn door so hot right now? For one, it’s all about the juxtaposition of the classic and the modern. The classic is represented by the barn door style, which evokes a pastoral feel. But the style can be tweaked and customized in order for it to have a more chic or trendy look. Aside from these, barn doors have several uses, apart from the obvious.

Why More and More People Prefer Barn Doors

There are really so many things that people like about barn doors. Here are some amazing features of barn doors that you can take advantage of.

1. It’s multi-functional.

You can stick to what’s customary and use a barn door like how it’s typically used. But you can also be more creative about it. Instead of using a divider, for instance, you can use this. Whenever you need some privacy, just slide the barn door closed. If you need more space, just push it open. This can also be used to enclose your laundry area or maybe a home office. A lot of people use barn doors as accessories as well. Creative ideas include making art pieces, shelves or tables from these types of doors.

2. It’s space-saving.

Typical doors swing outwards or inwards. These take up more space than sliding barn doors. If you prefer a big, towering door but you just don’t have enough space for it, use barn doors instead. These are also good options if you want doors for rooms that are in narrow corridors or tight areas.

3. There are several styles to choose from.

The usual notion about barn doors is that these are rustic-looking wooden doors. These days, however, barn doors exist in a variety of styles, colors, sizes, and materials. A more traditional approach, for example, would be to allow the wood to shine. Utilize timber or reclaimed wood, and then varnish this so that it’ll lend its bucolic character to your space. But if you prefer something that’s more contemporary, use a current paint color or an unusual or striking finish. Furthermore, you are not limited to using just wood. You can also utilize glass, steel or metal, or a combination of such materials.

4. There is a wide variety of hardware or barn door accessories to choose from.

door handle

One of the best things about using barn doors is there is definitely no shortage of accessories on hand. Considering the tracks alone can already be confusing because there are many designs available. Aside from standard tracks, there are spoke flat tracks, horseshoe, hammered and stainless steel, for example. You can also customize or choose from a vast assortment of handles and pulls, hinges, and other accessories.

5. It could be an eco-friendly choice.

A lot of farm houses that are set to be demolished probably still have all their doors intact. Most traditional barn doors are made from durable timber. By restoring these instead of building or buying brand new doors, you contribute to the environment by reusing or recycling precious natural materials that would otherwise rot or go to waste. Reclaimed wood from old barn doors can also be reused in several ways too, as mentioned above.

Getting The Right Flowers For Christmas

Getting The Right Flowers For Christmas

Share/Bookmark

Flowers are a great way to brighten up any home or space, and they are especially useful during the holidays. The Christmas tree is by far the most important part of the Christmas decorations, but there are other things that you can do to make your home seem welcoming for Christmas celebrations. With the right flowers you can make the home seem more inviting and make people feel more welcome, and the flowers help people get into the Christmas spirit. Not every flower is good for Christmas decorations, and you will want to make sure that you get good quality flowers so they do not wilt and die before you are finished using them as decoration.

Poinsettias

The most common flower that you are going to find in any Christmas decorating scheme is the poinsettia. Since the seventeenth century they have been used by Christians as part of the Christmas celebration, and that has continued even into the twenty-first century for Christians and non-Christians alike. Poinsettias are not like other flower arrangements because they will not survive in a vase like other flowers, and they are designed to stand on their own, not as a part of a large arrangement. A poinsettia needs to be kept in soil, and most poinsettias will arrive in a small planter or flowerpot for you to use until after the holiday. When you are getting your flowers set up for your home at Christmas make sure that you include at least one or two poinsettias to round out the Christmas spirit.

Roses

Though they are not as important for Christmas in the Western hemisphere, roses are very important to Eastern Orthodox Christianity, especially in Russia. The rose is seen as a symbol of the ultimate price of blood that Christ paid for the sins of the world, and so roses are inseparable from the Christmas celebration. The roses may be either red, for the blood, or white, for the purity, of Christ. Other colors are very rarely seen, and the arrangements are usually not very large. In this case roses should be used to highlight other Christmas plants, and should not be the focus of the Christmas decorating scheme.

Holly

Technically not a flower, holly is still a vital plant for home Christmas decorating. Holly shows up everywhere in Christmas decorations, and your home will need some to finish the Christmas feel of the decorating scheme. Holly is great to use in the wreath that you will want to place on your door, and it should be the plant that you use the most in your decorating. The dark green color of the leaves form an excellent contrast to the bright red and whites that you will have from the other flowers and plants in your decorations.

Decorating the home for Christmas requires a lot of different things, and you will want to make sure that you have all of them in place before you start decorating. The failure to have these plants in place will only make tying your Christmas decorations together that much more difficult, and it will be hard for you to get the Christmas theme that you want.

Different Ways To Back Up Your Data – Which Is Right For You?

Different Ways To Back Up Your Data – Which Is Right For You?

Share/Bookmark

There are all kinds of things you may want to back up, from the contents of your phone or tablet to your documents or photo library on your computer. You may want to back up your software, or even your computer’s entire set up. There are plenty of different ways you can back up your digital property, so you can get it back if something happens to the device it is held on or the files become corrupted in some way. Below are some of the most common ones, and what they are good for.

backup data Different Ways To Back Up Your Data Which Is Right For You?

Partitioned Drives

backup data1 Different Ways To Back Up Your Data Which Is Right For You?

You can set up a separate drive on your computer to use as a back up drive. You can schedule things to automatically copy over to the drive every night, or do it manually. This is one of the cheapest ways to have a back up you can use, and one of the easiest to restore from in many cases, however it obviously comes with a few problems. For one thing, when your back up is held in the same physical box as your original, you have no protection at all if the computer is stolen, damaged in a flood or fire, or simply gives up the ghost from old age.

External Hard Drives

backup data2 Different Ways To Back Up Your Data Which Is Right For You?

If you don’t want to back up to another drive on your computer, to save its space, you can use a separate hard drive. This works in essentially the same way, though you can buy external drives with huge memory capacities so this can be a better way to do things if you have massive media libraries and a lot of files to back up. While when an external hard drive is not having data shared between itself and the computer you can store it wherever you like, in practice people tend to leave them in the same area as their computer, meaning that again, many things that could take out your PC will take out the back up too.  This makes it really only helpful for restoring after certain issues like a software or operating system failure.

Cloud Back Ups

backup data3 Different Ways To Back Up Your Data Which Is Right For You?

There are lots of ways to get a secure back up via cloud hosting, which is where your files are stored somewhere on the internet, and won’t be damaged by anything that happens to your device. This means you can have copies of your files in a location where even if your phone or computer is stolen or irreparably broken, they will be safe and ready to download onto a new PC or phone.

There are various ways of doing this, depending on how much you need to back up. If you simply want copies of a few documents, a good ‘improvised’ way to get a cloud back up is simply to email them to someone or to yourself via your Gmail or other web based account. Your mail is archived on their servers, so the copies of your files will remain there as retrievable mail attachments. You can also back up your pictures by adding them to something like Facebook or Instagram.

For a more organized, ‘proper’ solution, you can use Dropbox, which lets you store files on the cloud and has the added benefit of giving you a very easy way to share files between people or your own devices. However, if you want a full back up of everything on your machine or your phone or tablet, you’ll need a cloud back up service designed specifically for this purpose for which you’ll have to pay a subscription.

Why You Are Wasting Your Property Right Now

Why You Are Wasting Your Property Right Now

property Why You Are Wasting Your Property Right Now

If you’re the house-proud type, then I’m not here to upset you or to insult you. I’m sure your home is lovely, well decorated and well thought out. However, if you’re like most people then your house is probably also somewhat underwhelming. Chances are that it’s just… a house and that it’s not really going to make anyone go ‘wow’ when they walk in or end up on an episode of Celebrity Cribs. You probably have a living room with a sofa and two arm chairs, you probably have a bedroom and a few guest rooms, and you probably have a front garden with a little bench in it… just like everyone else.

While your home may be perfectly nice if it fits this description, it also means you probably aren’t making the very most of it. You don’t actually have to be super rich in order to make your home look like something that might inspire envy from your friends and you can actually get a long way with just some basic changes and additions. You’d probably be surprised what your home is capable of, so read on and find out just what changes can benefit you the most…

Your Spare Rooms

property1 Why You Are Wasting Your Property Right Now

Having a spare room is one of the biggest wastes of a room possible. The very nature of a spare room or a guest room means that you’re only likely to use it if you have guests round or if you need to store your junk. The rest of the time you’ll be getting zero use from it.

Instead then, why not see if you can’t use your spare rooms for something a little more inventive that will impress your guests and make your home more fun to spend time in. For instance, a guest room could in fact be a home theatre (you just need a projector and some heavy curtains), a home gym or a library. Any of these things will make your home much more desirable and they will barely cost anything to implement. Then when you have guests, it’ a simple matter of unfolding a sofa-bed to give them somewhere more interesting to sleep.

Your Storage

property2 Why You Are Wasting Your Property Right Now

Likewise, if you have spaces in your home that are just for storage, then that is also a waste of what’s probably a large amount of space. Anything from a basement to a loft to an attic can be converted into a studio apartment, a bar or a second living room and this will greatly increase the number of potential uses for your property. Most basements are capable of this, you just need a waterproofing company and some imagination.

Exciting Features

The other way to get more from your home is just to invest in a few centre pieces and features that will make your home stand out and give it that wow factor. These features needn’t be expensive even – just a little different. How much nicer would that bench in the front garden look if it was next to a small novelty lamppost? And you’d be surprised how inexpensively you can add a balcony, with nice garden table, to your upstairs bedroom. All it takes it a little imagination and time and you can get a whole lot more from your home.

Thinking Of Buying A Boat? How To Choose The Right One For You

Thinking Of Buying A Boat? How To Choose The Right One For You

Share/Bookmark

Buying a boat is no easy task. There are many things to consider and it is important to make sure you take the time to work through each consideration. Otherwise you may end up spending an awful lot of money on a boat you don’t like or can’t actually use.

Below you will find 5 of these considerations, which will hopefully help you to decide on what is going to be the best boat choice for you.

1. Deciding on the size of the boat

Surprisingly a lot of people don’t really spend much time thinking about this before they go and buy a boat. However, not thinking about what size you are going to need before shopping around is a real issue. You need to think about who will be using the boat and why. For instance, will it just be for you and your partner to use on weekends, in which case you are not going to need a huge boat. Or do you require the boat for your entire family and for entertaining guests, in which case you are going to need more space.

When considering how large a boat you require, it is worth deciding on what your budget is going to be. Obviously, the larger the boat, the more it is likely to cost so having this figure in mind will allow you to plan more efficiently, what size of boat you are going to be able to get.

2. Where will you be sailing and storing the boat?

These are both really important considerations and can greatly alter the kind of boat you get. There are a huge number of boat types to choose from and you don’t want to buy the wrong type. For instance, the boat you would require to just calmly sail on an inland lake would differ greatly from one needed to sail in the open sea. Ideally, you need to have in mind the top reasons you want your boat (such as for fishing) and then make your buying decision in view of these reasons.

You will also need to decide where you will be storing your boat, for instance can you afford to store it at the local marina or will it need to be stored at your home. In either case you will have additional costs to consider, so you will need to really work out what type and size of boat most suits your situation and requirements.

3. Can you handle the boat?

It is absolutely critical, when you are buying a boat; you only buy one you can handle. Whilst it is not the case that every person who owns a boat operates it as well, it is a lot safer to know what you’re doing, even if someone else is doing the steering! If it is your first boat purchase, it is much better to start off small and then work your way up as you become a more experienced boatperson.

There are many cases where people have bought too large a boat to handle and ended up either not using it (which is a huge waste of money), or having to sell it. So even if you have enough money to buy a large boat, it is just not worth chancing the fact you won’t be able to handle it. If you are desperate for a larger boat, why not take some lessons first before buying? This way you can make sure you’ll be able to handle a larger boat safely.

4.  How important is being comfortable?

All of the above three points will have an effect of the comfort factor of the boat; however, you also need to take into account actual creature comforts. For instance many boats will not have a toilet or a place to sleep. You need to have a serious think about how much time you want to spend on your boat and who will be on it with you, as these factors will both impact on how much you need these creature comforts.

5. Your budget

Cost is obviously going to be one of the largest factors to consider when choosing a boat. With this in mind, it is best to work out exactly what you are looking for in a boat, make a list and then make a decision on what your budget is going to be. Never visit a showroom without having this figure in mind. Salespeople are very good at pushing our buttons and once they know you’re actually able to buy a boat, they won’t leave you alone until you’ve signed on the dotted line. This could mean you end up paying well above what you can afford.

Keep in mind there are a lot of other costs associated with owning a boat, such as transport, maintenance, storage, insurance, boat storage racks, and obviously the costs actually involved in running the boat. If you are not bothered about buying second-hand, this is also a good choice and will save you a lot of money. However, you do need to keep in mind you may end up paying more on maintenance for an older boat, so always ensure you have a full history of the boat and knowledge of any faults before making your purchase.

James writes for the Wickens Company. When not blogging, he can often be found changing his mind about which color to paint his boat.

How To Choose The Right Colours For Your Wedding

How To Choose The Right Colours For Your Wedding

wedding colors How To Choose The Right Colours For Your Wedding

While a themed wedding certainly isn’t for everyone, having a colour scheme I something much more common and much more popular. With so many disparate elements to your typical wedding, a colour scheme is a great way to tie everything together and lend some visual consistency to the proceedings. That said though, just as a good colour scheme can do wonders for this incredibly special occasion, so too can the wrong one undo a lot of your hard work and ruin the appearance of your venue and your bridesmaids. Here we will look at some pointers as to how to go about choosing a colour scheme that will be right for you and how to go about weaving that colour scheme into your various design decisions.

Choosing the Colour Scheme

wedding colors1 How To Choose The Right Colours For Your Wedding

When choosing the colours you want to feature most heavily on your big day there are a number of important factors to take into account.

First of course you need to think about the colours you like. Obviously this is an important day for you so you should make sure that the colours you’re looking at are ones that you like and that don’t make you feel ill. At the same time though you also to remember that a compromise needs to be made here between what you want and what your partner wants – narrow down a list of colours you can both agree on.

When choosing your colours know that you will normally have a ‘primary colour’ and a secondary colour. This means that you need to pick two colours that will match well – so find a pairing where you both like both colours. This will instantly narrow down your choices. Obviously these colours should be relatively high contrast so that they stand out in the wedding photography too.

Another consideration is what people are going to look good in. The bride will wear white so this won’t affect her but for the groom there are likely to be elements of the colour scheme in the waistcoat or flowers. Likewise you need to think about what will look good on the bridesmaids and groomsmen and what they will be happy wearing.

How to Implement Your Colour

Dressing your bridesmaids and ushers aren’t the only ways your colours will come into play though. Other ways you’ll use the colours are in your place settings, in your choice of flowers, in your invitations (a great early opportunity to hint at the colour scheme you will be going at is on the back of the invite or on the envelope), in the place names, in the wedding favours and in any ribbons or additional flourishes. You can even choose icing for your cake based on the colour scheme. Make sure that when you send your invitations that you inform your guests of the colour scheme so that they can opt to join in or not as they wish.

Get all this right and you’ll have a perfectly coordinated wedding that looks amazing in all the photos and that shows real time and care has gone into the design.

Today’s guest post is contributed by Lisa Hendricks. She is well known for her wedding photography in Peterborough. She is of the opinion that colors add a new life to the proceedings and is all for color scheming during a wedding.
