All You Need To Know About Sleep Apnea

All You Need To Know About Sleep Apnea

Typically speaking, Sleep Apnea refers to a sleep disorder where the breathing of an individual is disrupted during sleep. In other words, it starts and stops during sleep. The condition can cause a lot of harm and is considered to be a serious health risk. In this article, we provide an overview of what sleep apnea entails- the symptoms, diagnosis and the treatment. The idea is to provide general but reliable information for anyone who might be suffering from the problems themselves or know someone else with the symptoms.
Usually affected people are over forty and overweight, men in particular. Sleep apnea is a disorder where the breathing is disrupted during sleep. For anyone suffering form sleep apnea it is extremely important to treat the problem, because if left untreated it can lead to more and more pauses in breathing over time as a result of which less and less oxygen reaches the brain.
The two kinds of sleep apnea are Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Central Sleep Apnea. In OSA the airway is blocked due to the collapse of the soft tissue in the back of the throat. In CSA, the signal of the brain to breathe does not reach the muscle and this is due to an instable respiratory control centre.

The results of sleep apnea can be life threatening and include:

• High Blood Pressure
• Stroke
• Heart Attacks
• Diabetes
• Depression

If you have any two of these or more, you need to get yourself checked out.
• Waking up with a throat that is dry or sore.
• Snoring that is very loud
• Sometimes waking up feeling you are going to choke or gasp
• Feeling sleepy while driving
• Sleep that is very restless
• Waking up often at night and insomnia

Diagnosis and treatment:
One the first things that anyone needs to go through in order to check for sleep apnea is a sleep apnea test which is also called a polysomnogram. In this test, particular physical activities in your brain are mapped, transmitted electronically and recorded and then analyzed by a doctor.

Once it has been diagnosed that one has sleep apnea, the best form of treatment is considered. In some cases where the condition is not so severe, simple things such as losing weight, giving up alcohol and smoking, changing sleep positions can help.

In other cases treatment includes:

Continuous positive Airway Pressure: In this a mask is worn over the nose or mouth while sleeping and it is attached to a machine that provides a continuous flow of air into the nose or mouth. This leads to a more regularized breathing.

Using dental devices. Dental devices that help keep the airways open at the time of sleeping are another option. Only thing is the devices are to be specifically designed by dentists who know how sleep apnea is treated.

In addition to this, surgeries for sleep apnea are:

Nasal surgery

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)

MandibularMaxillar Advancement Surgery

Sleep apnea affects a large population and it is important to know what happens in order to recognize the symptoms. If any of these symptoms seem familiar, immediate consultation with the doctor is required and treatment should be sought.

The need to have quick response as well as all round coverage from medical bills and services are the most basic things which any citizen looks for. This also allows the individual to choose better and more suited plans for himself as well as for his family.

overlay family 300x195 Do it yourself: health savings accounts creation and managing online

How the plans work

I order to enroll for medical insurance and to get the assurance that in the hour of need, the services will be available for the person in question, the individual needs to register for a medical plan and pay a yearly amount. In many plans, the intricacies are such that the person ends up at the receiving end in case of any complication. With a view to prevent this from happening, the person must have a sound understanding of the way in which the plan works and thereafter choose accordingly.

Advantages of the HAS

The health savings accounts for America aim at allowing the citizens the maximum possible benefits while they register and pay the amount for the health insurance as such. The biggest advantage of the system is the clarity with which the plans and the options are laid out for the citizen to choose from. The added advantage of the yearly contribution getting deducted from the income allows tax savings and in many cases, the tax ends up getting reduced as compared to the previous dues. The plans also allow the customer to go in for tax free savings option, wherein an individual can save up to $3300 and a family can save close to $6500 every year. These options are attracting many to enroll in the health savings plans and reap the benefits as well.

Do you really need a health care plan?

The answer to this question is a strong positive. When a person is suffering from any disease or ailment, the knowledge that the plan is going to take care of all bills is something which relaxes the person on the financial front. The security of having a medical plan is unmatched as compared to saving those few dollars a year and hoping to be able pay the hefty bills with those savings. Not only does the plan allow a quick decision of turning to the specialists in case of any emergency, the plan also allows the person to remain tension free during the whole ordeal as such. With these advantages clearly evident, each one does indeed need a good health insurance plan. While at it, the benefits of the HAS in terms of tax savings must also be used as and when possible.

The fast paced life we lead calls for a fast response at time of any emergency and the inclusion of a person in a good medical plan is what shall ensure these services. The demand of the hour being expert medical care and hassle free handling of the charges, these are easily met by the offers on HSA. With an aim to be prepared for a rainy day, one must have some backup and security which shall come in handy when the chips are down. With these things in mind, the health savings accounts information is something which must be used by all.

The Impact Of Healthcare Fraud On Society

The Impact Of Healthcare Fraud On Society

EXAM ROOM The Impact Of Healthcare Fraud On Society

The Impact Of Healthcare Fraud On Society

If you have health insurance, chances are your co-payment or deductible has been climbing in recent years. You can really feel the impact if you allow your portion of your medical expenses to be taken out of your paycheck. Health insurance companies have different reasons for increasing costs, but there is one reason that probably hasn’t occurred to you that contributes to the spike: Health care fraud.

Medical Fraud Abounds

The ever growing problem of healthcare fraud in our society has literally chipped away at our country’s fabric. As expressed by one Houston criminal defense lawyer, “As the United States works to provide important public services to its citizens, the federal budget sets aside a substantial amount of money for healthcare expenses. To cut back on abuses committed against this system, the government regularly investigates cases of healthcare fraud. If there is sufficient evidence to put together a case, a suspect may face federal fraud charges.”

Health care schemes have kept insurance investigators quite busy over the past few years since health care fraud has become a lucrative operation. The schemes are perpetrated nationwide. For instance:

Doctor Payoffs1. In May 2011, Gentiva, a national for-profit hospice and home health provider, had to pay $12.5 million for falsely billing Medicare.

2. In February 2012, a doctor in Dallas, Texas, his office manager and five home health care owners were arrested for bilking Medicare out of $375 million. In addition, the licenses of 78 home health care agencies were suspended because of their known association with the doctor.

3. In May 2012, the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. Health and Human Services Medicare Fraud Strike Force took down 107 licensed medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, in seven states for falsely billing Medicare for unnecessary treatment or treatment that was not provided. The false billing amount totaled $452 million dollars.

4. In March 2013, The U.S. Attorney’s office in Detroit charged 44 people with health care fraud and drug distribution schemes. The scheme involved “patient recruiters” who paid bribes and kickbacks to people who allowed doctors and pharmacists to bill their Medicare, Medicaid and private insurances for certain medications and health services that were not provided or were not necessary. The prescriptions were filled at pharmacies that were also involved in the scheme.

HealthPaying More For Less

It’s easy to believe that health care fraud only affects the people who have been caught committing the crime. But, health care fraud forces both consumers and businesses to pay more money in health insurance. The largest fraud target, Medicare, is paid for by all taxpayers, meaning everyone takes a hit in the wallet.

Not only does health care fraud trigger rising health costs, it also means there are fewer medical services available.

Some physicians, particularly those with small practices, have left their practice because it has become too costly to operate their business.

There is also a loss of doctors and other health care professionals when they are indicted for fraud and have to shut down their practices or agencies and go to prison. Depending on the type of fraud committed, some are able to avoid prison time with help from their attorneys by negotiating settlements with insurance companies.

According to FBI statistics, fraudulent health care schemes cost U.S. taxpayers about $80 billion a year. The FBI, which investigates Medicare and Medicaid fraud claims, expects these schemes to continue since the country spends a whopping $2.7 trillion on health care. With that much money available, some medical professionals are willing to risk their careers – as well as their patients’ health – to get it.

After researching the issue of white collar crime in our society, Nadine Swayne forwards this article to shed light on the problem. Johnson, Johnson & Baer, a Houston criminal defense lawyer group, can represent you if you have become ensnared in a scheme to commit healthcare fraud or are facing charges. They will aggressively defend your rights to help you regain your life.

Are All The Health Sites Out There Actually Bad For Us

Are All The Health Sites Out There Actually Bad For Us

These days, most people’s first port of call when they notice something out of the ordinary or are experiencing symptoms is to look them up online. There are all kinds of health resources out there, including things like WebMD which are, to some extent, there to help us diagnose ourselves and find suitable courses of treatment for minor problems. While this works great with something trivial and easy to diagnose like poison ivy, sunburn or an insect sting, there are lots of symptoms that can relate to countless different conditions, some minor and some serious, and thinking we have found out what is wrong with us because of some web research can be quite dangerous.

are all health sites out Are All The Health Sites Out There Actually Bad For Us

Why Health Resources Online Can Give a False Sense of Security

are all health sites out1 Are All The Health Sites Out There Actually Bad For Us

If you have a common symptom, like stomach pain, you may look online and see that this can relate to an almost endless list of problems, many of them simple bugs that will go away in time and can be alleviated somewhat with over the counter medicines. This can make you feel like your condition is most likely to be one of these, and that you should buy some medicine and give it a few days before you start to think about going to the doctor. However, that same symptom could relate to a lot of serious problems too, many of which need to be addressed as early as possible. While the website tells you this, it is easier to believe that you’ve got one of the more minor things, which can lead to dangerous choices.

Why Health Resources Online Can Cause Problems with Seriously Ill People

are all health sites out2 Are All The Health Sites Out There Actually Bad For Us

Doctors recommend that if you are diagnosed with a serious condition, for example a form of cancer, you don’t do too much research around it online. This is because there are so many complexities and differences in treatments that the more you read, the more confused you will become and you may also begin to question the decisions your own doctor has made. While questioning things is OK if it gives you peace of mind, it is important for patients to trust their doctors rather than online resources which may relate to subtly different cases.

How to Use These Resources Wisely

are all health sites out3 Are All The Health Sites Out There Actually Bad For Us

The best way to use health information technology on the web is to:

  • Never regard them as an alternative to visiting your doctor, and if the results of your search advise you to call a doctor immediately, don’t ignore them.
  • Stick to using them for advice on minor complaints where you know what you are dealing with.
  • Only use well known, credible health websites for advice and information.
  • If researching a serious condition you or someone you know has been diagnosed with, remember that every case is different and treat it more as background research than trying to find answers to your own case – that is your doctor’s job and you have to trust them.
  • If an over the counter remedy is advised, make sure you read the label – while for most people they are safe you need to check the person who will be taking them doesn’t have a reason not to take them (for example being pregnant, too young or allergic to an ingredient).

Experts Warn against Devastating Health Effects of Miracle Weight Loss Pills

Experts Warn against Devastating Health Effects of Miracle Weight Loss Pills

Shedding those extra pounds, either due to health concerns, for a special occasion, or simply to up one’s feelings of self-worth and self-confidence has been a Holy Grail of sorts, for men and women around the world – and this has been literally going on for decades. The main issue in this picture is that would-be weight losers often base their mind-frame on the wrongful assumption that there exists some of sort magic pill, a miracle diet of one kind or another, which can help them lose the bothersome weight overnight. While diet approaches differ widely from one (scientifically approved) plan to another, from one expert to the next, and even among dieters (to rightfully account for differences in metabolism structure, lifestyle, etc.), science basically is in consensus over one specific fact. That is, weight is not gained overnight; similarly, expecting to shed it in an unreasonably short amount of time is preposterous and naïve.

In spite of repeated such assertions from everyone and anyone in healthcare, it seems there is still a market for the impatient, instant gratification seekers. It is the providers on that market that are perpetuating the belief that weight loss can be achieved through magic pills and other similar solutions. The dieting pill industry is the one responsible for a recent event, which occurred in late October, in which an Irish teenager who had been attempting to lose weight with sibutramine pills was rushed to the hospital immediately. The teen thought she was taking ‘herbal’ pills, as advertised on the package, when, instead, doctors found otherwise and proceeded to remove her colon, to save her from further complications.

This case drew the attention of the Australian media, which promptly looked into the possibility of buying such pills down under: nowadays, getting your hands on a sibutramine containing slimming product costs no more than $1.49 per pill. The pills are instantly accessible to anyone who can afford paying for them, as they are being marketed online – one website even purports that such pills could be the solution to the issue of obesity in Australia! While their actual effects with respect to slimming are still debatable, their side effects are much more of a certainty. Sibutramine has been reported to cause heart problems, which can even go as far as causing heart attacks and strokes. Until 2010, the substance was only available on prescription. After health concern claims started popping up, it was removed from pharmacies – only to become available online nowadays.

According to the experts at the psychotherapy clinic Bayside Psychotherapy in Melbourne, eating for comfort, or in order to assuage anxiety, depression, loneliness or other perceived voids in one’s life can quickly escalate to a weight issue. However, diet pills are not the answer. Properly addressing the food addiction or the binge eating patterns is – and clinic patients are encouraged to embrace modern, alternative methods such as NLP, mindfulness therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. Aside from providing relief from often damaging issues, these therapies also help sufferers learn how to help themselves, as they make their way back to a full recovery.

A recent experiment in body image perceptions challenged such notions as BMI and societal standards, by asking experts to weigh in on a female model whose height and weight correspond to the countrywide average. The average woman in Australia, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, now weighs 70.1 kilograms, compared to her 1995 counterpart, who was lighter by 3.1 kilos. Also, the average Aussie female has a BMI of almost 26, which places her in the risk zone for obesity (it ranges from a 25 to a 29.9 BMI). While BMI does not allow for skeletal structure and muscle mass, it is also a fairly good indicative of a person’s risks of weight issues. And the reality is Australians aren’t getting any thinner – but fast-track ‘miracle’ solutions are certainly not going to solve anything.

The documentary of the same name shook things up for many Americans audiences in 2011 when it examined hard evidence that most degenerative diseases can be controlled and, in some cases, reversed by building our diets around plant-based foods and rejecting animal-based and processed foods.  Published the same year, this book gives readers a handy tool kit for applying the lessons of the documentary to real life.  Chapters on reading nutrition labels and transitioning are particularly helpful for the wellness newbie.

4. Skinny B**** by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin

This provocative title became a #1 New York Times bestseller when desperate women everywhere grabbed the book hoping to tap into a new and trendy weight loss solution.  What they got was a smack down of raw truth: an honest look at what the average American diet is doing to our bodies, our beauty, and our health.  Not convinced that a quarter pounder with cheese is all that bad for you?  Perhaps, chapter four (The Dead, Rotting, Decomposing Flesh Diet) will change your mind.

Bad Cholesterol And Its Body Production and Effect on Health

Bad Cholesterol And Its Body Production and Effect on Health

The bad cholesterol versus good cholesterol is a common theme for discussion about a diet. LDL cholesterol (bad) or low density lipoprotein is simply a waxy steroid of fat. HDL cholesterol (good) or high density lipoprotein is a form of cholesterol who’s job is to transport cholesterol from veins back to liver. This process is important because cholesterol cannot be dissolved in the blood. So the production and absorption of a cholesterol is in full control of your body. A cholesterol is important for proper hormonal function of testosterone, repairing and building of cells. So what is the problem? Why your body is putting so much cholesterol into your veins that could later kill you? Answer is very simple. To save your life, to hold you alive as much as possible, that’s your body job. It can look curious but it is so. The problem is your diet. Your blood PH have to be 7,365. Always. A difference of 0,1 means death. So the rules are simple – eat food that results in alkaline digestion – fresh raw vegetables and fruit. When you eat acid forming food, your body will store cholesterol in your veins to protect them against damage by an acid. So if you want to live longer, cooperate with your body, because the body is only one person who is always on your side.
