Help! There Are Bugs In My Car: Tips To Get Rid Of Pests

Share/Bookmark

You decided to take your car out for a drive, and while you are on the road, you notice that something is crawling up your leg. You can’t concentrate on the road because you want to scratch at the itchy areas, and then bam! You collided with another vehicle because you took your eyes off the road for a few seconds.

This may seem like an unlikely scenario; however, a lot of people get into accidents because of this kind of distraction. This distraction is usually caused by ants, bedbugs, or other insects and bugs in your vehicle. These pests may not look like much but their presence can be very dangerous and disastrous. Aside from the grim scenario mentioned above, these pests can also cause car problems. To this end, you need to make sure that your car is pest-free. Here are a few tips to get rid of bugs and insects in your car.

General Car Cleaning Tips

One of the main reasons why insects and bugs invade your car is due to their need for food and warm shelter. If you are always leaving behind your trash, such as soda cans, candy wrappers, fast food wrappers, or bags of chips in your car then you are inviting these unwanted passengers into your vehicle. To this end, you need to properly clean both the interiors and exteriors of your vehicle. Keeping your car sanitary and clean can discourage these pests from invading your space.

  • Remove the seat covers and rugs and then wash them. Throw them in the dryer at the highest allowable setting for about half an hour to an hour. Heat washing and drying the seat covers and rugs can kill any bedbugs, carpet beetles, and other pests that might have attached to them.
  • Vacuum the seats and floors of your car. Pay close attention to carpets, seats, seams of the upholstery, and so on. You should also vacuum the exteriors of your vehicle, such as around the hood opening and trunk opening. This is where the leaves and dirt can accumulate. In addition, vacuum all the doors. This will get rid of ants, roaches, spiders, and other bugs.
  • Make sure to get rid of any debris or trash from the floorboards and under the seats of your vehicle.

How To Naturally Get Rid Of Bugs In Your Car

Diatomaceous Earth: You can apply diatomaceous earth on all the cracks and seams in the upholstery. You should also sprinkle this substance on the carpet. This substance is a natural rock talcum powder which can easily eliminate insects and bugs; however, it is not harmful to humans.

Vinegar Mixture: You can mix half a cup of water and half a cup of vinegar. Mix them together and pour it onto a spray bottle. You can spray it on your tires to keep pests away. Removing their point of contact can significantly lower the risk of infestation. You can also use this mixture to wash down hard surfaces in your vehicle. Do not worry about the smell because it will eventually go away once the mixture dries.

Eucalyptus Leaves: You can place a bag of eucalyptus leaves or a sprig of eucalyptus under the car seats or in the trunk. The scent of eucalyptus can naturally deter insects and bugs.

Lemon-Scented Cleaner: Use this to wipe the surfaces of your vehicle. This will not only remove dust and dirt, but it will also discourage pests, such as spiders, ants, and roaches.

Boric Acid: You can create bait for these bugs and insects. Simply mix boric acid and syrup, and then place it under the seats or in the trunk. The sweet scent of the syrup can attract bugs and insects while the boric acid dehydrates and kills them.

If the infestation in your vehicle is so severe, you will need to call a professional pest control contractor. They can easily and efficiently get rid of bugs and insects from your vehicle.

Wood TLC – How To Get Rid Of Common Stains

Wood TLC – How To Get Rid Of Common Stains

Share/Bookmark

Wood is a very popular material for floors and furniture because it is elegant yet hard-wearing. Moreover, when using natural wood, you won’t find any two pieces that are exactly the same. Each part is unique, with its own character that helps give more sophistication and style to a home. But since wood is a natural product, it is expected to deteriorate in time, and wear and tear occur much more quickly if it is not properly maintained. In order to prolong the life of any item that’s made of wood, it should be given some proper tender love and care from time to time. Still, though you’ve ensured that wood is well-maintained, it can still suffer damage due to everyday use.

Stain Removal

Taking care of wood can be a challenge, most especially when it’s about removing stains. Let’s face it, stains are bound to happen, and when they do, you should know what to do. Here are some tips that you might find helpful.

1. Removing White Stains

Have you noticed white stains on your hardwood floors or maybe your wooden table? These are usually water stains and are easy to remove because white stains often occur on or near the surface. Sometimes, you can just allow the stain to dry and it’ll disappear on its own. If it doesn’t come off, there are many other ways that you can try. Rub the affected area for a few seconds with a dry cotton cloth warmed by a hot iron. Do not use steam. Another way is to lightly rub the stain using a fine steel wool soaked in lemon oil. The oil will lubricate the area to prevent scratching.

2. Removing Black Stains

Black stains are harder to remove because these indicate that water has infiltrated the finish. First, allow the stain to bleach out. This will require you to use bleach, which you can apply on the stain using a toothbrush or a cloth. If the bleach doesn’t do the trick, buy a wood stain remover. Be sure to read the instructions on how to use the product. In case these methods do not work, you can sand the stained area and reseal.

3. Removing Ink Stains

When you accidentally spill ink on your expensive hardwood floors, you might cringe in horror thinking about how much it would cost you to get rid of the stains. It’s actually not that expensive to remove ink. Although it can produce a stubborn stain, wiping away the newly spilled ink using warm soapy water can help. Use dishwashing soap. This often works with polished or waxed wood. For untreated wood surfaces, use a paste made with baking soda and some water. Apply the paste over the stain and then gently rub it. The mild abrasive characteristic of baking soda, as well as its chemical properties, can help in lifting away the stain.

General Rule

It’s not a good idea to use just any kind of product when eliminating stains on wood because some things can cause discoloration while others can permanently damage wood. The general rule is to use warm sudsy water when removing non-oily stains, while those that are oil-based should be taken out using solvents, like mineral spirits, or cold water with some ammonia. If you don’t know how to get rid of stubborn stains on wood surfaces, get help from expert cleaners.

Filmmakers: How Get The Perfect Shot The First Time

Filmmakers: How Get The Perfect Shot The First Time

Share/Bookmark

filmmakers Filmmakers: How Get The Perfect Shot The First TimeFinding the right shot and actually capturing it with your camera can be rather difficult, if you don’t know your way around your equipment or know how to use your eyes just as much as your camera.

Using Your Eye to Capture the Shot

Your eyes are just as important, if not more important than your camera is, in capturing quality shots. In order to get the right shot, you have to focus your brain on a person or an object that is completing the action worth filming. Consider it a good rule of thumb to train your eye to include a ‘hero’ in each shot, filmed so that the audience has a focal point within the frame. An individual who is having an inspirational moment would obviously be the hero to be focused on just as a bottle of rum would be in a scene of an alcoholic considering ending his sobriety.

Regardless of who or what you choose to be the ‘hero’ of your shot, it is important to have a main character or subject. Without focusing in on the hero, the audience can be confused as to what exactly they should be paying attention to, and it could mean losing their attention altogether.

Need some tips on how to help your audience pinpoint who the ‘hero’ of a shot actually is? Take a look at some classic Hollywood techniques you can use to make your hero standout.

  • Make sure that the hero within a scene has the moving role, so that the eye is drawn only to them
  • Use lighting techniques to make the hero just a little brighter than the rest of the scene
  • Use your camera lens zoom feature to make everything else in a shot just a little blurry, this will make the hero stand out
  • Don’t make the hero a part of the background, bring them forward within the frame

These are just a few of the ways in which you can help your audience’s eye to focus and make your subject the true hero of a shot.

Using Your Camera to Capture the Shot

Now, if you have used to your eye to create the perfect shot in your mind, you want to be sure that your camera skills and knowledge will actually allow you to transfer this to the camera. Familiarizing yourself with your camera is absolutely necessary if you want to be successful.

This means reading through the manual, beyond the quick start instructions, and playing with all of the features. You might be surprised to find that your camera is equipped with certain options, or should be adjusted to film in certain locations.

If you have a new camera, or happen to think that playing with your camera could break it, there are plenty of options to help you get to know your equipment better. Not only do most modern cameras come with detailed manuals, but most manufacturers offer detailed tutorials for each camera on their website. Additionally, some digital cameras are now equipped with a default, or reset, feature so you can play with your camera all you like, and can return it to its original settings easily.

By simply getting to know your camera, and learning what it can, and cannot, do, you can begin to plan your scenes around the action that your eyes see. Recognizing the scenes and actually capturing them the first time exactly how you want them won’t happen overnight. To get the shot the first time, you need to train your eyes and practice with your camera equipment.

Get Involved! Tips For Starting Out In Charity Fund Raising

Get Involved! Tips For Starting Out In Charity Fund Raising

Share/Bookmark

There are thousands of good causes out there that need money to continue their good work. Whether it’s a global charity that helps people all over the world, a charity that targets a specific medical cause, an animal charity or a local community issue, like most people, you probably have at least one cause close to your heart. Raising money for that cause could not only help them, but also give you a fun and rewarding hobby that helps you meet new people and learn new skills!

Here are some ideas for your first charity fund raising effort:

Run, Walk, or Get Active

charity fund raising Get Involved! Tips For Starting Out In Charity Fund Raising

There are all kinds of different active things you can do for charity, and get sponsorship for from family and friends. Depending on your fitness level, you could pick a marathon, a triathlon, or something easier like a walk. Whatever you choose, it should be something you will find difficult and need to train for – not only will people be far more likely to give if you are doing something you’ll find hard, but you’ll also get a huge sense of achievement. It can be a great idea if you are trying to get fit, as it will force you to be accountable for sticking to your exercise schedule.

With online sponsorship websites and tools, you can collect sponsors and get their payments after your charity activity is over very easily, and can share what you are doing simply on Facebook and Twitter to gain more support.

Make and Sell Something

charity fund raising1 Get Involved! Tips For Starting Out In Charity Fund Raising

A bake sale, craft sale or similar style of event can be a great way to raise funds, and can be really fun to put together. You can get help from your children, friends and other family members to not only make things and man the stalls, but also to design fliers and publicize it locally. Again, you can use social media to help spread the word and encourage people both to help and to come along.

Put On a Special Event

charity fund raising2 Get Involved! Tips For Starting Out In Charity Fund Raising

If you fancy something a little more upmarket than a bake sale and less sweaty than a marathon, you could put together a glamorous charity event. This can take a lot of planning and isn’t cheap, though it is acceptable to put some of the funds raised towards recouping the money you spent. You can either look to do this yourself, or work with a professional events planning company. You can have a lavish meal, dancing, speakers, and even fun things to take part in like a raffle or silent auction.

Generally, these kinds of evenings raise money by charging people for tickets and then having additional ways to give at the party. This means you will not only need to put on a good event, but make sure it is promoted well enough to encourage people to want to buy tickets. Online marketing within your local area can make a big difference when it comes to creating a buzz around your event, as can having a local celebrity or two on board to attend either as guests or speakers.

How To Get Plenty Of Natural Light In Your Home

How To Get Plenty Of Natural Light In Your Home

Share/Bookmark

Thanks to electricity, lighting the home is easy as we can get all the light we want with the flick of a switch. If you want a different atmosphere in the home then candlelight can really help set the mood and you can also change the brightness of electric light to help achieve the effect you are looking for. As useful as artificial light may be to us however it is highly advisable that you allow as much natural light to enter the home as you can. Natural light from the sun is important to our health as it is thought to help us to process various vitamins and minerals and has a positive effect on our mood. If you would like to encourage natural light into your home, you have some options available to you.

Windows

The most obvious of all is to use windows as they offer little or no resistance to allowing the light in at all. Some rooms, such as attics, are unlikely to have a window already but there is no shortage of options for windows that you can install provided, of course, there is an exterior wall or roof to use. With windows installed you can then use blinds and curtains to help regulate just how much light you allow into the room because as good as natural light may be for us it can get a little too bright at times.

Mirrors

Sunlight cannot bend around corners on its own so some parts of the home may not be accessible to the rays of the sun. By using some mirrors, however, you can direct the path of sunlight helping to bathe otherwise sheltered parts of the home in the rays of the sun. You could mount the mirrors so they can be adjusted allowing you to change the direction of the sun to fit your mood whether you would like as much sun light coming in as possible or if you are in the mood for darkness. You will need to bear in mind that this method could intensify the rays of the sun which could possibly make it too bright and concentrated sun beams could even pose a fire hazard.

Sun Tunnels

In some rooms of the home it is not possible to use windows to allow the light in and options such as mirrors are not always practical. One option could be to use a sun tunnel which will help channel the light from outside into the home. Part of the tunnel is mounted on the home’s exterior where there is plenty of light and the tunnel will run through part of the home to reach the room that needs more light. As with other sources of natural light, the amount of light allowed into the room can be regulated helping you to get the right mood in the home. If you do have a room in the home that appears to have no access to natural light a sun tunnel could be just what you need.

Jamie Finch likes to have a lot of natural light in the home as it makes to help the place feel more cheerful. He gets his windows and other supplies from Ken’s Yard, a leading online retailer of VELUX Windows.

office pranks 10 Hilariously Evil Office Pranks That Might Get You Fired

We all love a good prank, and sometimes office pranks can be the most hilarious. Livening up one of many dull days in the office with a well thought out prank can be key to cheering everyone one up; apart from the person on the receiving end of course. Some people, however, opt to take the simple tomfoolery a step further by integrating careful planning and precision. These are definitely what would be considered the more evil of pranks. So carry on reading for some immense ideas and inspiration for pulling off your own shenanigans. Just be sure that whoever you’re pranking can take a joke!

Mouse Trap

This is something you can easily do yourself in a couple of seconds. If you use Bluetooth powered keyboards or mice in your office, try swapping two of your colleague’s around. They will be confused and befuddled as they try to work out why theirs isn’t working, as well as why someone else’s words are popping up on their screen! This pranks won’t last long (it’s pretty quick to figure out) but it’s hilarious while it lasts!

Gift wrapping

This takes time but can be a doozy! When someone’s birthday comes around get your fellow colleagues to help gift-wrap everything in their office or desk area. The result will be them having to unwrap at least ten “presents” before they can ever get down to work.

Tap into their pet hates

True story: This office decided to take revenge on a co-workerwho had departed for a long 2 week holiday during a busy month. Knowing how much he hates all things girly, his workmates decorated his office in pink wallpaper, Disney Princess photos, curly ribbon and girly memorabilia. We’d love to have seen his face!

Cups

Have the time to fill your co-workers office with cups? Watch this videoand see if you have the time to do something this evil. Even more points if you fill the cups up… but that could get messy!

Jelly Stapler

If you’ve ever watched The Office (UK) you’ll be familiar with the “jelly stapler” prank. This is a great one for those who want optimum laughs but minimal effort. You could trap whatever you want in the jelly – a stapler, folder, and even a printer! The limit is as big as your imagination… and amount of jelly at hand.

Post-It Notes

Post-It notes are every prankster’s best friend. Now there’s two ways you can go with one – you could cover the entire office with post-its, or you could simply label everything in the entire office with its own little post-it note. They’re not just for passive aggressive notes about finding out who used your mug!

Crime Scene Cubicle

Make your co-workers cubicle or desk into a crime scene – this means sectioning it off with police tape (which you can find on eBay) and going a step further with a chalk outline of the dead body. Go wild, but perhaps inform your boss first.

Toilet Office

If you can (and if it’s plausible) you can move your co-workers entire desk and office-area into the toilet. Using the toilet seat instead of a desk chair of course!

This funny, but ill-advised list was irresponsibly compiled by Printerinks.com; the online store that sells ink cartridges and stationary to offices all over the UK and Europe.
