Having a fancy dress wedding is something that isn’t going to appeal to everyone. Some people will undoubtedly accuse these kinds of weddings of being novelties, at the expense of being taken seriously. Others will be aware that some of their guests might not get into the spirit of things – and that having a fancy dress wedding could even put them off the whole idea of coming. Others still will simply not like fancy dress – particularly on a day when they’re supposed to be able to look their very best.
But for others, fancy dress weddings are a fantastic concept – a brilliant way to add something completely different and unique to their special day and ensure that it is as memorable as possible. A great way to ensure that everyone has a good time and a good laugh, and even a unique form of expression that will allow them to show the world who they are as a couple.
So if you fall into that latter camp, let’s take a look at some ideas for fancy dress that might just be perfect for your wedding. And if you do not? Read on anyway – because you might find that the idea isn’t quite as vulgar as you at first thought.
One of the reasons that you might want to consider fancy dress even if it isn’t normally your kind of thing, is that it can be subtle thing. You don’t necessarily have to go all out or go crazy with your costumes, and you don’t have to put pressure on your guests to do so either. Just invite your guests to add a single item to their outfit for instance – such as a hat. This way there will be something unique and consistent about your day, and it will help to get people into the spirit – but it won’t take over the whole event.
Other similar examples could be to get everyone to wear wellies with their outfits (the juxtaposition looks great in the wedding photography) or to wear a single item of red.
Going All Out
On the other hand though, if you do want to go all out, then there are a few themes you can come up with that will really add to the occasion.
For instance, why not get everyone to come as zombies – a zombie bride always look amazing. Alternatively you could do a superhero theme, a pirates theme, a ‘medieval theme’ or a Disney theme (great if the bride has always wanted a fairy tale wedding).
The secret to a good theme is to make sure that it’s something everyone can appreciate – so nothing too niche that other people just won’t get. That said though, do make sure that there’s an element of ‘you’ in that choice – your theme should say something about you as a couple whether it’s a TV series that you both love, or whether it’s somehow connected to how you met.
Finally, make sure that you go all-out with the little touches. Themed cakes, themed music and themed drinks can all help to really sell your unique idea.
